Join SAAC at the Annual Welcome Back BBQ

Aug. 31, 2016

On September 5, SAAC is set to host its annual Welcome Back BBQ for all student-athletes and staff.  This is the second year that the entire Department of Athletics will be together on Labor Day to welcome all new staff members, incoming students, and kick start the variety of community outreach initiatives for the 2016-2017 school year.

The mission of SAAC, in partnership with the SBM Charitable Foundation is to “impact lives”.  Coming together as a united department in the beginning of the year will set the tone of a spectacularly impactful year on the field of play, in the classroom, and in the community.  The SBM Charitable Foundation has graciously sponsored the event, as well as providing funding for all Husky Reach and Goal Line programs throughout the academic year.

The event will offer a variety of backyard games, including badminton, corn hole, kan jam, and frisbee, as well as a selection of barbeque foods, and – of course – UConn’s famous Dairy Bar ice cream.

In addition to the kick off, we are introducing out new student-athlete development program – Husky LEADs (Lead. Elevate. & Develop. Student-Athletes). This unique group will be composed of captains (or potential captains) from each of the intercollegiate teams at the University of Connecticut.

The selected body of student-athletes will meet once a month during the academic year amounting to a total of 5-7 meetings.  In collaboration with the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes Staff, Student Activities Leadership Office, and Athletic Department as a whole, Husky Leads will cover a variety of subjects to develop participants into better leaders and teammates.

Themes to be included are what it means to be a good leader, goals and goal setting, relationship building and communication, and personal values, among others to ensure the continuous evolution of their leadership abilities.

This year will be an extraordinary year for SAAC and the student-athlete populations as we aim to build leaders for tomorrow and continuously improve the student-athlete experience.
