STORRS, Conn. - Jim and Marylee Oleksiw, of Rocky Hill, Conn., will be honored by The UConn Club at its 58th Annual Award Dinner with the A.J. Pappanikou Outstanding Contribution Award. The event will be held on Tuesday, April 19 at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell, Conn.
The Oleksiws have a long history of contribution and service to the UConn Club and the UConn Division of Athletics.
A native of Manchester, Conn., Jim was an engineering major at UConn and graduated in 1975. He also served as a resident assistant in Buckley Hall.
Marylee is from a small town in Massachusetts and grew up watching sports as a cheerleader at her high school. She attended college at the Hartford School of Nursing and graduated in '75.
The couple stated dating in college and married shortly after graduation. In fact, Jim proposed to Marylee on the UConn campus at Mirror Lake.
The couple joined the UConn Club in the mid-1980s and have each served in leadership roles. Jim served as president of the group from 2007-09 while Marylee was the president from 2000-02. Jim is currently a member of the UConn Club Board of Directors while Marylee was a member of that group from 1993-2002. Marylee spoke in front of the Connecticut General Assembly in support of the building of Rentschler Field.
They have been instrumental in the success of The UConn Club Annual Auction throughout their years of service through overall logistics of the auction. The Oleksiws also have an endowed scholarship for the sports of football -- The Oleksiw Family Football Scholarship.
The Oleksiws are faithful followers of their Huskies both at home and on the road. They have attended all four of the men's basketball team's appearances in the Final Four and all five of UConn's bowl games in football. They have also attended numerous women's Final Fours and followed the Huskies to locations such as Hawaii and the Virgin Islands.
Jim is a 1975 UConn graduate as are both of the couple's children - Dave in 2003 and Kathy in 2005.
