UConn Club Holds 63rd Annual Awards Ceremony

STORRS, Conn. - The 63rd Annual UConn Club Awards Ceremony was held on Tuesday night at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts.

A number of UConn student-athletes were honored at the event as Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athletes and Outstanding Senior Athletes as well traditional UConn Club Awards. UConn's Student-Athlete Advisory Council joined the program for the first time this year and presented a number of new awards for the evening voted by the athletes themselves.

The most moving part of the evening came with the awarding of the Courage Award, which was presented for the first time this year. The winners were Ryan Radue (Appleton, Wisc.) of the baseball team and Laura Ruttan (Stittsville, Ohio), of women's swimming and diving, who both overcame incredible medical setbacks to continue their careers at UConn. The following were honored with Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards: Nnamdi Amilo (New Fairfield, Conn.) of men's basketball; Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) of women's ice hockey; Caitlin Cole (Trumbull, Conn.) of women's swimming and diving; Brenna Conrad (Staatsburg, N.Y.) of rowing; Jacklyn Dubois (Mount Vernon, N.H.) of softball; Joey Ferriss (Novi, Mich.) of men's ice hockey; Emily Howard (Tolland, Conn.) of women's track and field; Istvan Kanyo (North Haven, Conn.) of men's soccer; Kennedy Meier (Winnipeg, Man.) of women's swimming and diving; Megan Palmisano (Chatham, N.J.) of field hockey; Karaline Smith (Acton, Mass.) of women's lacrosse, Jacob Spreyer (Denver, Colo.) of men's tennis and Ned Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) of men's track and field.

The following were honored with Senior Athlete Awards: Chris Ackell (Brookfield, Conn.) of men's track and field; Greg Baliko (Fanwood, N.J.) of men's swimming and diving; Odrine Belot (Elmont, N.Y.) of women's track and field, Sophie Bowden (Somerset, England) of field hockey; Sarah Bowens (Hillburn, N.Y.) of women's track and field; Carson Cross (Brentwood, N.H.) of baseball; Oluwatosin Edwards (Windsor, Conn.) of men's track and field; Moriah Jefferson (Glenn Heights, Texas) of women's basketball; Nyanka Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of women's track and field; Lauren Kwasnowski (Kingston, N.Y.) of women's lacrosse; Jeff Magin (Brookfield, Conn.) of men's swimming and diving; Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) of women's lacrosse; Deysha Smith-Jenkins (Milwaukee, Wisc.) of women's track and field; Breanna Stewart (North Syracuse, N.Y.) of women's basketball; Srna Stosljevic (Novi Saad, Serbia) of women's tennis; Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, Ill.) of women's basketball, Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) of women's swimming and diving; Roisin Upton (Limerick, Ireland) of field hockey; and Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) of men's golf.

Jim and Jane Mitchell, both UConn Class fo 1983, were awarded the A.J. Pappanikou Outstanding Contribution Award. For details, CLICK HERE.

Football kicker Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) was the winner of the Don Ruck Award, given to the UConn student-athlete each year who has displayed commitment to community service and leadership on campus. The other finalists were Karaline Smith (Acton, Mass.) of women's lacrosse and Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) of baseball.

The Donald Kinsman Award is given by the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes and is presented to student-athletes who have demonstrated universal success during their time at UConn.

The female winner was Brenna Conrad (Staatsburg, N.Y.) of rowing and the other female finalists were Lauren Kwasnowski (Kingston, N.Y.) of women's lacrosse and Megan Palmisano (Chatham, N.J.).

The men's winner was Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) and the other male finalists were Joey Ferriss (Novi, Mich.) and Kyle Huson (Parker, Colo.) of men's ice hockey.

The SAAC Awards were:

Male Athlete of the Year: Winner, Carson Cross (Brentwood, N.H.) of baseball; other finalists were Craig Hunter (Robbinsville, N.J.) of men's track and field and Shonn Miller (Euclid, Ohio) of men's basketball.

Female Athlete of the Year: Winner, Breanna Stewart (North Syracuse, N.Y.) of women's basketball; other finalists were Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) of women's ice hockey and Roisin Upton (Limerick, Ireland) of field hockey.

Male Rookie of the Year: Winner, Abdou Mbacke Thiam (Dakar, Senegal) of men's soccer; other finalists were Max Letunov (Moscow, Russia) of men's ice hockey and Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) of baseball.

Female Rookie of the Year: Winner, Liane Keegans (Ridgefield, Conn.) of women's soccer; other finalists were Katherine Foley (Trumbull, Conn.) of women's track and field and Amelia Iacobucci (Malvern, Pa.) of field hockey.

The Husky Cup winners were men's track and field and women's track and field. These awards are given annually to the teams that utilize resources available to them on campus to learn professional and development skills. Incentive is also given to attend athletic events and become involved in community outreach activities.
