Geno Auriemma

On Moriah Jefferson tonight:

“She has been pretty good for most of the days at practice. She takes advantage of the things that she does well and that was evident tonight. She didn’t shoot the ball much from the perimeter, even though she has been shooting the ball well from there in practice. You can see the confidence level that she is playing with. That is something that she was not able to do last year at this time.”

On the transition for high-scoring high school recruits to Connecticut:

“I don’t think there is any convincing that we have to do. I think by virtue of a high school kid deciding that they want to come to Connecticut…they know that there days of averaging thirty-eight points a game are over. They end up enjoying the fact that there are a lot of other things that they never did in high school. It makes the game more fun. There really isn’t much that we have to do to convince them.”

On Brianna Banks:

“I was pleased because you don’t know what you are going to get early on. She has been, in practice, really good, and then she has struggled at times. The struggles haven’t really been physical, they’ve been mental, and that’s what happens when you haven’t played in a long time. You haven’t had to make mental, or any, decisions because you just go and you rehab. She played tonight the way she has practiced. She did a whole bunch of good things, she did a few things she is rusty on, but all in all it was good.”

On the energy of Bria Hartley:

“She is another one that gained a lot of confidence last year. Even though she got hurt, before that injury she had gotten to the point where she knew she could contribute and there were some things she could do. That carried over and that was really good to see, her attitude has been great.”

Freshman guard Saniya Chong

On how her skills are transferring at the college level:

“I think that I’m going to get there. I’m just a little nervous getting the hang of it right now. Practice is practice, but games are different. Coming out here in my first game I wanted to take it slow.”

On what she did best:

“I think limiting my turnovers. When I would handle the ball and go down the court I would really try to limit my turnovers and bad passes.”

On evaluation of her play:

“The first half was rough but once the second half started I just became more focused so I think that was better.”

Sophomore Guard Moriah Jefferson

On Brianna Banks returning from injury:

“She played well. It was the first game of the season and as everyone knows, she just got cleared for full play. I think she came out and played well. She played well on defense and made some good plays going to the basket too.”

On her first exhibition game last season and evaluation of Chong tonight:

“It was nerve-wracking. I think she did better than I did last year. On the court talking to her, she wasn’t as nervous. She made some good plays and she got a good layup in. She missed her first free throw and she never misses free throws so that must have been nerves. Other than that, she played well.”

On getting tuned up for the regular season:

“It’s good that we came out and played this way. Like Coach Auriemma says, no matter where you are playing at, as a team we need to be on the same page. I think we came out and shared the ball well and we all played good defense.”
