STORRS, Conn. - Double-digit point totals from five different Huskies lifted the University of Connecticut women's basketball team past IUP 111-39 Tuesday at Gampel Pavilion. Sophomore Katie Lou Samuelson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the team with 24 points.
Samuelson was 10-of-19 from the field with five rebounds and four assists. Junior Gabby Williams (Sparks, Nev.) was close behind with 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals. Classmate Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) dished out 17 points whil.e sophomore Napheesa Collier (O'Fallon, Mo.) contributed 13. UConn led 33-19 after first quarter.
The Huskies, who held the Crimson Hawks to just single-digit point totals in three quarters, outscored IUP 35-5 in the second, 24-9 in the third, and 19-6 in the fourth. The first quarter was the only frame in which IUP reached double-digit point totals (19).
As a team, the Huskies shot 61.4 percent (43-70) from the field and held the Crimson Hawks to a 32.6 shooting percentage. UConn went on a 19-0 run over a span of 4:27 to close out the first half, taking a 44-point lead, 68-24, after the second quarter.
Freshman Kyla Irwin (State College, Penn.) put up 12 points on the board, going 4-5 from the paint and grabbed four rebounds in her college debut. Also taking the court for the first time were Molly Bent (Centerville, Mass.) and Crystal Dangerfield (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), who combined for four points, four assists and three rebounds.
UConn will conclude its exhibition schedule Sunday, Nov. 6 when it welcomes Pace University at the XL Center in Hartford. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
