SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior Maya Moore (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led all scorers with 20 points, while adding 11 rebounds for her 29th career double-double as the No. 1/1 University of Connecticut women's basketball team defeated No. 10/13 Texas 83-58 on Tuesday night in the AT&T Center.
Moore led the way with 20 points, 10 of which she recorded from the free throw line, while senior Tina Charles (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 15 points and 11 rebounds for 40th career double-double. All five starters registered double-figures, as sophomores Tiffany Hayes (Lakeland, Fla.) and Caroline Doty (Doylestown, Pa.) added 10 and 13 points, respectively. Kalana Greene (Saint Stephen, S.C.) finished the night seven-of-12 from the field for 14 points.
After an opening 3-0 lead was tied by Texas, UConn recorded a 22-6 run in a span of 8:11 to take a 25-9 lead midway through the first half. The Huskies held the Longhorns without a field goal for a period of 7:02 in the half, while holding Texas to a .222 clip (9-of-35). UConn's lead in the first frame was extended to 21 as Doty knocked down a three pointer with seven seconds on the clock before the halftime break.
Doty led all scorers at intermission with 12 points, while Moore added 11 as the Huskies' shot .500 (16-for-32). Greene was four-of-eight in the first half to add eight points to UConn's tally.
The Huskies continued to dominate in the second half as they shot .452 (14-of-31) from the field, while holding Texas to a .400 (12-of-30) showing from the floor, including three-of-nine from behind the arc. The Huskies were led by Greene in the second frame, who earned her 51st career game with double-figure points.
UConn finished the night shooting .484 (30-of-62) from the field and outrebounded the Texas 47-36. The Longhorns shot .323 (21-of-65), including a 5-of-18 clip from behind the arc in tonight's contest.
Charles' 15 points moved her past Shea Ralph (1,678) for ninth place on the UConn career scoring list as tonight marked her 86th game with double-figure points.
Moore's 20 points marked her 44th career game in double-figures, while her four blocked shots in the first half matched her single-game best from a year ago.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 142-53 all-time versus Top-25 AP ranked teams. UConn has now won its 41st consecutive game by 10 points or more with the non-conference victory.
UConn will return to action on Friday, Nov. 20 as the Huskies will travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Holy Cross. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised live on CPTV.
