Head Coach Geno Auriemma

They didn’t sit in the sun all day, that’s why they played well.  They had their chance to do that yesterday.  No more sunnin’ and funnin’ today except for a limited amount of time on game day.

On the way the team played tonight

It’s hard to complain about the way we played tonight, especially in the first half.  The defensive intensity was really good for the entire game and we forced a lot of bad shots.  I don’t know that we did a great job of rebounding in the first half but we forced a lot of bad shots overall.

We got out in transition really well to start the game.  As usual, we got the ball moving and we attacked the basket really well and that’s why we shot all those free throws.

On the return of 2011-12 All-American Bria Hartley

She had an opportunity to get out and play and I thought she looked like her old self in stretches but you can tell she is a little rusty.  She is a really good free throw shooter and she missed a few of those.  But that will come and I expect that she will get a little bit better every day.  For the first time out, I was really encouraged.

Bria has worked really hard to get herself mentally and physically prepared to play this year and she was amazing in the preseason.   She was probably our best player on our team.  She worked really hard and was in great shape and the set back was just that; it set her back a little bit.  I know Bria will get to where she needs to be because she’s got a really good focus this year on what she wants to do.

On the mindset of the team

We really do try to share the ball.  I think everyone on the team has that unselfish mentality and it works really well.

I think our defense our pretty good for the most part.  There were some rough patches we need to fix but we’ll work on that.  We came into this tournament wanting to take care of business.  Even though this is a beautiful place, we are here to play basketball.

On how she felt in her first game back

I felt a little slow, especially defensively.  It’s kind of hard reacting all the time so I felt a step slow defensively.

On relying on her instincts tonight

Yeah it was mostly instincts and I don’t think you can think too much.  I have to realize that I am going to come back a little slow but you don’t forget how to play basketball.  I look forward to coming back and hopefully getting better and better.
