Thoughts about the team’s performance tonight
You come down here to win three games. We want to play a certain way and establish a certain identity of who we are and how few are going to play so that we know and that everyone knows that when Connecticut plays this year, this is what’s going to happen.
Everybody had their turns to play real well and everyone had their turns to struggle a little bit. Last year, we could only play six or seven guys max because that’s all that could contribute to us winning. This year we’ve got way more than that. People have had to adjust their roles a little bit and it’s worked out well so far.
Going in, we knew Purdue has great guard play and they have the ability to shoot the lights out. I don’t think those guards tonight missed more than a couple shots. So we knew that all we could do was get a hand in their face and make it tough for them to make shots but they made a couple shots from really deep. Sometimes you just have to give credit to the kids shooting the ball.
We just stayed with our stuff, made shots of our own but we didn’t need to make 13 three’s like we did last night. We found out that we have a lot of different ways to win rather than just one way.
On being the first freshman since Maya Moore to be named MVP of the Paradise Jam
It’s very nice to be compared to Maya Moore but I’m just going to go out and play hard. I just need to play my game and not worry too much about comparisons.
On her defensive play
I think I’m improving on defense. It’s just something I need to keep working at in practice so I can keep showing improvement in games.
On how she has progressed in her first three games back from injury
In the first couple games I felt a little out of place and out of rhythm but I got in more of a groove tonight and felt better and was really happy with the way the team played tonight.
On her improvement defensively
I think I was the worst defender in the country my freshman year. Just ask Coach, he’ll tell you! The competition is another level here than it was in high school so once you learn the rotation and it just takes time. I don’t think I really got it until the end of my sophomore year.
On UConn’s team defense
A lot of what we do is that we depend on each other more. In high school, you guard your main and only worry about your main. Here we need to know what spot to be in on the floor at all time to help each other. So you have to know that you have help if you get beat and you also have to know that you have to help your teammates.
