HARTFORD, CT (January 18) - The University of Connecticut women's basketball team defeated BIG EAST opponent Georgetown 72-49 Saturday in front of 16,294 at the Hartford Civic Center. The victory was UConn's 55th in a row, setting a new Division I Women's College Basketball record for consecutive victories.
Both teams stumbled out of the gate in the first half. Georgetown (11-3, 2-2) did not make a field goal for the first seven minutes and 30 seconds. However, UConn (16-0, 4-0) also struggled from the field early and held only an 8-5 advantage with 12 minutes remaining. It was all Huskies for the remainder of the first half as UConn went on a 21-8 run over the final eight minutes to take a 29-13 advantage at the half. Junior Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) keyed the run with 10 points and finished with 12 at the half.
Georgetown came out hot in the second half mounting an 11-2 run early in the stanza to pull within nine points. Gerogetown would get no closer as the Huskies answered with a 16-2 run of their own over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
Taurasi finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, Jessica Moore (Anchorage, AK) had seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Junior Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh , PA) came off the bench to score 12 points. Taurasi, Moore, and freshman Ann Strother (Castle Rock, CO) helped UConn out-rebound Georgetown 48-25 which the Huskies were able to convert into 14 second chance points to the Hoyas two.
Carmen Bruce and Rebekkah Brunson led Gerogetown with 15 and 11 points respectively.
UConn is back in action on Monday January 20th as they take on Conference foe and No. 20 nationally ranked Notre Dame at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Indiana. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
