STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore guard Katie Lou Samuelson was selected to the Dawn Staley Award Mid-Season 2017 watch list, as announced by organization Monday.
The Dawn Staley Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country; a player who exemplifies the skills that Dawn possessed during her career, including ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win.
The Huntington Beach, Calif. native currently leads the squad, averaging 21.4 points per game. She racked up a career-best 34 points this season at Tulsa on 13-18 shooting. Samuelson scored 94 points over a three-game stretch this season, including that career-best showing against the Golden Hurricane.
Former Husky, Moriah Jefferson won the Dawn Staley Award in 2016 after helping the Huskies to their historic fourth-straight national championship.
The award will be announced during Final Four weekend and the award ceremony will be held in April, 2017 at the Union League of Philadelphia.
Samuelson and the rest of the Huskies take on Cincinnati on the road tonight (Feb. 7) at 7 p.m. UConn returns home on Saturday, February 11 when the team welcomes SMU to Gampel Pavilion for the annual Play 4Kay game. Gametime is set for 2 p.m. and the contest will be televised regionally on SNY.
