Three Huskies Selected to Naismith Top 30

Feb. 8, 2017

STORRS, Conn. - Three Huskies are among the names of the Naismith Top 30 women in consideration for the 2017 Naismith Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday.

Junior Gabby Williams and sophomores Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson represented UConn on the list of 30 hopefuls to be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists next month.

UConn's three picks are tied with Notre Dame for the most selections from any single team. Florida State, Tennessee, Maryland, Washington and South Carolina all had two student-athletes represented on the Top 30 list.

Williams currently leads the team in assists (125) and steals (63). She is the fourth Husky on the squad averaging double-figure point totals this season with 12.6 points per game. The Sparks, Nev. cemented her name in the record book, becoming the fifth Husky in program history to earn a triple-double after she finished with 16 points and tied career highs with 16 rebounds and 10 assists at East Carolina on Jan. 24 the fifth triple-double in program history.

Collier, who ranks third in the nation for field-goal percentage (68.7), has been consistent across the stat board this season. The O'Fallon, Mo. native leads the team in blocks (42) and sits second on the team in scoring (19.5 ppg) and in steals (44). Collier was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this year on Monday after shooting a near automatic 81.5 percent from the floor. She followed that up with a perfect 10-10 performance at Cincinnati Tuesday.

Samuelson stands atop the UConn leaderboard, averaging a whopping 21.3 points per game. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native is also third on the squad in steals (32) and fourth in assists (61). A member of the Preseason All-Conference First Team, Samuelson ranks among the top-10 in the nation for three-point field goals per game.

UConn has won more Women's Naismith Trophies than any other school -- now with a total of 10. Former UConn standout, Breanna Stewart, who won the award in 2014, 2015 and 2016, was the third Husky to win the award in multiple seasons, joining Maya Moore (2009, 2011) and Diana Taurasi (2003, 2004).

The 10 national semifinalists will be announced March 2, 2017.
