ATLANTA Ga. – Four University of Connecticut women’s basketball standouts are in the running for the Citizen Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year honor, as announced by the Naismith Awards Board of Selectors. Napheesa Collier, Kia Nurse, Katie Lou Samuelson and Gabby Williams were included on the 30-player late season list.
The four student-athletes have been instrumental in Connecticut’s (25-0) success this season. Each of the Huskies are averaging double-figures and lead the team in at least one statistical category. Samuelson and Nurse have been nearly unstoppable from long range this season as the duo is shooting 47.8 percent and 47.7 percent, respectively, from three-point range to lead the nation. Samuelson is pacing the team with 18.0 points per game and Collier is bringing in a team-high 7.9 boards per game, while Williams turns defense into offense with a team-high 64 steals and 129 helpers.
UConn has won more Citizen Naismith Trophies (10) than any other school and continues to lead the competition with four players listed.
The late season team will be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists on Feb. 26. Then, four finalists will be revealed on March 14. Fans will be able to support their favorite player by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote between March 19-30 to cast their ballot, and the fan component counts for 5 percent of the overall final vote.
