STORRS, Conn. – The No. 1 UConn women’s basketball team celebrates senior day on Saturday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Memphis at Gampel Pavilion. Saturday’s tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and will be broadcast regionally on SNY.
UConn seniors Saniya Chong (Ossining, N.Y.) and Tierney Lawlor (Ansonia, Conn.) will be recognized approximately 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Fans should aim to be in their seats promptly at 4 p.m. for Saturday’s senior celebration.
The Huskies (27-0, 14-0 The American) secured its fourth-straight American Athletic Conference regular season title after defeating No. 23 Temple 90-45 on Wednesday. Junior Gabby Williams (Sparks, Nev.) became the 43rd player to join UConn’s 1,000-point club after she put 15 points up on the board on perfect 7-7 shooting.
Sophomore Napheesa Collier (O’Fallon, Mo.), who is currently second in the nation in field-goal percentage (68.0), racked up a career-high 31 points against the Owls, shooting 13-14 from the floor, 2-2 from three-point range and 3-3 from the charity stripe. She also added 13 rebounds to grab her 11th double-double of the year.
Memphis enters Saturday’s matchup 13-14 overall and 6-8 in league play. The Tigers suffered back-to-back losses to Cincinnati and SMU this past week. Prior to those losses, Memphis was an even 6-6 in conference games after a three-game win streak with victories against USF, Tulane and East Carolina.
The Tigers are led by Cheyenne Creighton, who averages 14.7 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest. Most recently against SMU, Creighton reached 200 rebounds this season, bringing down seven against the Mustangs. She also leads the team in blocks with 18.
UConn is undefeated 6-0 in the all-time series against Memphis. The Huskies and the Tigers met on two occasions in January of 2016. UConn defeated Memphis by at least 40 points in both meetings.
The Huskies close out the 2016-17 regular season at USF on Monday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla.
