STORRS, Conn.-The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team kicks off the 2012 postseason on Sunday, Mar. 4, at approximately 8 p.m. in the Quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Huskies enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 Rutgers.
UConn is playing its eighth BIG EAST Tournament at the XL Center in Hartford and owns a 21-2 mark in its previous seven years of BIG EAST Tourneys played at the facility, including the 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 titles. UConn has won 20 of its last 21 BIG EAST Tournament games in Hartford following the 2011 Title.
The Huskies, who have defeated Rutgers previously in the season, had five Huskies honored with BIG EAST postseason accolades earlier this week with freshman standout Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis leading the charge. Mosqueda-Lewis was named the Freshman and Sixth Man of the Year and named to the All-BIG EAST Second and Freshman teams. Additionally, senior Tiffany Hayes and sophomore Bria Hartley were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, sophomore Stefanie Dolson was an Honorable Mention and freshman Kiah Stokes was selected to the All-Freshman squad.
With a 23-4 all-time mark in BIG EAST quarterfinals, the Huskies will look to Hayes to continue to lead the team in scoring (15.9 ppg) and steals (71) as she is also second on the team in rebounding with 5.7 grabs per game and third in assists. Mosqueda-Lewis is the second leading scorer with 14.4 points per game and Hartley is averaging 13.7 points each contest.
Sunday’s game will be televised by ESPNU with Bob Picozzi (play-by-play), LaChina Robinson (color) and Allison Williams (sideline) on the call. The contest will also be broadcasted live on the UConn Radio Network with Bob Joyce and Kara Wolters.
