Top-Seeded Huskies Set for AAC Tournament

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The top-ranked and top-seeded UConn women’s basketball team will begin postseason play in the 2018 American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship. The Huskies (29-0, 16-0) will face No. 9 Tulane (14-16, 5-11) Sunday at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

UConn won its fifth straight regular-season conference title in 2018. The program has gone 86-0 in regular season conference games since joining the American. The Huskies have won 14 straight conference tournament games, dating back to 2013. UConn is 79-13 all-time in conference tournament games.

The Huskies brought home numerous conference honors this year, including 2018 American Player of the Year Katie Lou Samuelson. Kia Nurse was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year while Azurá Stevens picked up Sixth Player and Newcomer of the Year honors. Samuelson, Nurse, Napheesa Collier and Gabby Williams were named to the conference’s first team while Stevens was on the second team and Crystal Dangerfield was on the third team.



Numerous Huskies are finalists for national player of the year honors. Samuelson and Williams are Naismith Trophy semifinalists while they are joined by Collier as Wooden Award finalists. Nurse is a finalist for the Lieberman Award (top point guard), Samuelson is a finalist for the Drysdale Award (top shooting guard), Williams is a finalist for the Miller Award (top small forward) and Collier is a finalist for the McClain Award (top power forward).

Scouting the Green Wave
Ninth-seeded Tulane beat No. 8-seed 76-64 on Saturday to advance to Sunday's quarterfinal. Kolby Morgan led the Green Wave with 27 points in the game. This season, Morgan is averaging 19.5 points per game to lead the team.

The Huskies have faced Tulane twice this year. UConn picked up a 98-45 win on Jan. 27 in Storrs and a 91-47 win in New Orleans on Feb. 21.

The NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Show isn’t until Monday, March 12, but in anticipation of UConn likely being selected as a host site, Husky fans are able to purchase tickets for the first two rounds now.

Should UConn host, First and Second round games will be played at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs on either Friday, March 16 & Sunday, March 18 OR Saturday, March 17 & Monday, March 19. A total of three games will be played in Storrs. All opponents, dates, and times will be identified when the tournament bracket is revealed.
