BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is ready to play in its 23rd-straight NCAA Regional Semifinal when it faces fifth-seeded Mississippi State on Saturday, March 26 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. Tipoff is set for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN with radio coverage on the UConn/IMG Radio Network.
UConn (34-0) advanced to the Regional Semifinal with a 97-51 victory over Duquesne on Monday night at Gampel Pavilion. Senior Breanna Stewart (North Syracuse, N.Y.) led all scorers with 21 points to go along with 16 rebounds for her 39th career double-double. Classmates Moriah Jefferson (Glenn Heights, Texas) and Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, Ill.) tallied 20 points apiece, making it the first time since UConn played Dayton on March 30, 2015 that three Huskies had at least 20 points in the NCAA Tournament.
Connecticut owns a 21-1 all-time record in the Regional Semifinals and have advanced to the Regional Final in each of the last 10 seasons. Husky head coach Geno Auriemma secured his 105th career NCAA Tournament win on Monday and is within seven victories of tying former Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt (112).
Saturday’s matchup with mark the first meeting between the Huskies and Bulldogs.
Mississippi State advanced to the Sweet Sixteen after upsetting fourth-seeded Michigan State, 74-72, on Sunday. Three Bulldogs finished in double digits, led by sophomore Victoria Vivians with 24 points.
Earlier this week, Stewart, Tuck and Jefferson were selected as All-Region III team members and Wade Trophy finalists by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Additionally, Auriemma was tabbed as the 2016 United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year.
The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 28.
