Five Former Huskies Selected for 2016 United States Olympic Team!

Former UConn great Maya Moore will be seeking her second-straight gold medal.

STORRS, Conn. – Former University of Connecticut women’s basketball stars Sue Bird, Tina Charles, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi have been selected to the 2016 United States Olympic Team as announced by USA Basketball on Wednesday morning. 

Team USA has won the gold medal at each of the last five Olympic games, including the 2012 team that was coached by UConn head coach Geno Auriemma.  Auriemma will also serve as the head coach of the 2016 team. 

2016 marks the fourth selection for both Bird and Taurasi.  Former Tennessee standout Tamika Catchings will also be making her fourth Olympic Team.  Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie are the only other players to make four United States Olympic Teams. 

Charles and Moore will appear in the Olympic Games for the second time while Stewart, who played on the United States FIBA World Championship Team in 2014, will be making the Olympic Team for the first time. 



Pool play begins on August 6 in Rio de Janeiro, while the quarterfinals begin on August 16.  The Gold Medal game is scheduled for August 20.
