June 21, 2017

CROMWELL, Conn. - The Travelers Championship takes place this week at the TPC River Highlands as the PGA Tour makes its annual stop in Connecticut. The tie-ins between UConn and the Travelers are numerous.

Travelers Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Andy Bessette is one of the key parts of the tournament and also serves on the UConn Board of Trustees. Bessette is a UConn graduate and was an All-American weight thrower for the track and field program.

There is a UConn graduate in the Travelers field this year for the first time in recent memory in Zach Zaback. Zaback qualified for the tournament on Monday by winning a qualifier held at Ellington Ridge Country Club. He graduated from UConn two years ago and normally plays on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

Wednesday was pro-am day at the Travelers and once again there was a distinctive UConn flair to it.

Hall of Fame women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma played with pro Webb Simpson.

The UConn trio of former men’s basketball coach and Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun, men’s ice hockey coach Mike Cavanaugh and former men’s basketball standout Scott Burrell, now the head coach at Southern Connecticut, played with pro Harold Varner III.

Women’s basketball associate head coach Chris Dailey and women’s basketball legend Rebecca Lobo played with Retief Goosen. Lobo is a member of the UConn Board of Trustees with Bessette.

The UConn trio of head football coach Randy Edsall, men’s basketball standout Ray Allen and football standout Dan Orlovsky played with pro Hunter Mahan.

In addition, Edsall, Dailey and Cavanaugh played in the Celebrity Mini-Golf Tournament. The actual tournament gets going on Thursday and runs through Sunday.
