VICENZA, Italy – The UConn women’s basketball team left Florence late morning on Friday and stopped in Vicenza to square-off against the Italian All-Stars at 7 p.m. local time. The Huskies defeated the All-Stars, 103-45, and set off for Trieste following the game.
The contest also served as a fundraiser for cancer research and the Huskies wore their blue practice uniforms with pink accents.
The Huskies jumped out to a 29-12 lead at the end of the first quarter after Katie Lou Samuelson set the tone with 15 first-quarter points. Samuelson ended the contest with a game-high 23 points on 9-13 shooting, including 5-9 from long-range to go along with five assists.
Kia Nurse added 17 points while Kyla Irwin came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-8 shooting and made each of her three attempts from beyond the three-point arc. Gabby Williams scored 15 points and Azurà Stevens chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
The team arrived in Trieste early Saturday morning and is scheduled to visit Slovenia during the afternoon. The fourth and final game of the tour is scheduled for Sunday, August 20 at 1:30 pm. EDT.
