TRIESTE, Italy -- The Huskies opened Sunday with a walking tour of the beautiful northeastern Italian city of Trieste and ended the day with a 79-59 loss to Celje. Katie Lou Samuelson led the way for UConn with 17 points while Gabby Williams added 12 points and four rebounds and five assists.
Celje is a professional team that recently won the Slovenian and Adriatic league championships.
UConn began the day with a fabulous breakfast at the hotel in Trieste and then embarked on a tour through town and onto the highest point of the city. The tour continued on foot as the team walked back to the hotel via a different route.
Following some free time in the city, UConn enjoyed a pregame meal at the hotel before crossing the border into Slovenia to square-off against Celje. The ride from Trieste to the border is only about 15 minutes.
UConn jumped out to a 22-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and clung to a 37-36 edge at the conclusion of the first half. However, Celje outscored the Huskies 25-10 in the third quarter to seize control of the game.
The Huskies forced Celje into 23 turnovers but committed 16 miscues and points off turnovers were knotted up at 15. UConn was also outrebounded by a 51-32 count.
Napheesa Collier was held out of the game after suffering an ankle sprain in UConn's third game of the trip. The Huskies decided to not play the 2017 All-American due to precautionary reasons.
Megan Walker added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Connecticut.
The Huskies will spend a final night in Trieste before departing to Venice on Monday morning. Venice will be UConn's final stop before returning home on Wednesday.
