After breakfast on Tuesday morning, UConn embarked on a 45-minute boat ride to the island of Murano. The tiny island is famous for its glass making and the Huskies were treated to a demonstration by a master glass maker.
The demonstration far exceeded the expectations of the team as Diego, the master glass maker, first transformed sand heated to about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit into a wine glass and then fashioned another glowing collection of sand into the shape of miniature horse. That process, which was accomplished with only a pole and a tool that resembled a pincer, amazingly took less than five minutes.
Following the demonstration, the owner of the factory presented Coach Auriemma with a beautiful glass representation of the UConn logo while the team reciprocated with a couple of signed jerseys.
After a trip into the factory’s show room, the Huskies took a boat to the small fishing village island of Burano and enjoyed a fantastic lunch in the charming setting.
The team then traveled back to St. Mark’s square in Venice proper and took advantage of a couple more hours in the fantastic city.
UConn is scheduled to fly out of Venice airport on Wednesday morning and is expected to arrive back in the Nutmeg State on Wednesday evening.
