Trio Of Huskies Named AP Preseason All-Americans

STORRS, Conn. – Senior Gabby Williams (Sparks, Nev.) and juniors Napheesa Collier (O'Fallon, Missouri) and Katie Lou Samuelson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) of the UConn women’s basketball team were selected to the Associated Press Preseason All-American Team, as announced on Tuesday afternoon, marking the first time any school has three of the five players named to the AP preseason squad.

The trio played an vital role in the Huskies success last season, that included an NCAA record 10th straight trip to the Final Four, a NCAA Regional Final Championship and both The American Regular Season and Tournament titles.

Collier, the 2016-17 American Co-Player of the Year, started all 37 games last season and paced the offense with 20.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game and 77 blocked shots. The forward scored in double-figures in all but one games played and posted two 30-point games, including a career-high 39 points against USF on February 27. Following a stellar sophomore campaign, the O'Fallon, Missouri native garnered First Team All-American honors by the AP, WBCA and USBWA in 2017. Additionally, Collier was tabbed The American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year.

The 2017 WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year, Williams was one of three Huskies to start all 37 games. A 2017 Associated Press Second Team All-American selection, Williams led the team with 100 steals and 190 helpers to become the first post player to pace the team in assists.  She finished third on the team with 14.3 points per contest.



The 2016-17 American Co-Player of the Year, Samuelson finished her sophomore campaign averaging 20.2 points per game, second to only Collier. Samuelson's 119 made three-point field goals marks the second-highest single-season total in UConn history. The Hunting Beach, Calif. native scored in double-figures in all but two games and posted at least 20 points 16 times, including a career-high 40 points in the conference tournament championship game against USF on March 6. Samuelson concluded the 2016-17 season garnering First Team All-American Honors by the AP, WBCA and USBWA.

South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson and Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell round out this year’s team. Wilson, Samuelson and Collier were honored as first-team All-Americans last spring. Mitchell and Williams were on the second team.

The Huskies open the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m. against Stanford in Columbus, Ohio on ESPN.
