STORRS, Conn. – The No. 2 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team will face its third ranked opponent of the season when the Huskies square off against No. 15/14 DePaul at Gampel Pavilion Thursday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Thursday’s game will be broadcast on SNY with radio coverage on the UConn/IMG Radio Network.
The Huskies are undefeated 5-0 to start the season after they extended their second-longest winning streak in program history to 80 games, defeating Chattanooga 80-43 Tuesday. Four Huskies were named to the 2017 Naismith Trophy Watch List Wednesday morning as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Juniors Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) and Gabby Williams (Sparks, Nev.) and sophomores Napheesa Collier (O’Fallon, Mo.) and Katie Lou Samuelson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each claimed a spot on the watch list comprised of 50 student-athletes and were the only players representing the American Athletic Conference.
Collier led the Huskies against the Mocs after she shot 11-12 from the floor for a total 23 points. Samuelson finished second on the team with 19 points. She has recorded double-figure point totals in all five contests this year. DePaul marks the third ranked opponent that UConn will face this year. The Huskies pulled out back-to-back wins against then-ranked No. 12 Florida State and No. 2 at the time Baylor to kick off the 2016-17 season.
Williams recorded her second consecutive double-double Tuesday after she brought down 10 rebounds and totaled 11 points in a season-high 28 minutes on the court against Chattanooga. Nurse was the fourth UConn player to finish in double figures against the Mocs after she registered 12 points in addition to four assists and three rebounds.
No. 15/14 DePaul is 5-1 this year with only loss coming against No. 4 Baylor. The Blue Demons earned their highest ranking since the 2010-11 season after most recently defeating top-20 Syracuse 108-84 on Sunday. Brooke Schulte led the way for DePaul with 21 points and Jessica January racked up a double-double with 18 points and 13 assists.
UConn leads the all-time series with DePaul 13-1 with its only loss coming in the first meeting between the two in 1983. The Huskies are undefeated in the last 13 match-ups with the Blue Demons. Last season, UConn defeated DePaul 86-70 on the road in December of 2015. The last three contests between the two prior to that meeting have been at home.
