STORRS, Conn.- The No. 2 UConn women’s basketball team welcomes No. 11 Maryland (4-1) to the XL Center for Monday night’s Jimmy V Classic showdown on ESPN2. The 7 p.m. contest will be nationally televised with Dave O’Brien, Doris Burke and UConn great Rebecca Lobo on the call. The game will also be broadcasted live on the UConn Radio Network with Bob Joyce and Debbie Fiske.
UConn (6-0) has been dominant in the early season outscoring opponents 92-43.3 with five Huskies averaging double-figures as freshman standout Breanna Stewart leads the way with 16.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (16.2 ppg), Stefanie Dolson (13 ppg), Morgan Tuck (10.3 ppg) and Kelly Faris (10 ppg) join Stewart in the double-figure club.
The Husky defense has been outstanding holding opponents to a 28.3 field goal percentage, outrebounding foes 14.5 per game, forcing 22.8 turnovers per game and blocking 39 shots in regards to only being blocked four times. Sophomore Kiah Stokes is the blocking leader with 11, while Mosqueda-Lewis has recorded a team-high 12 steals.
The Huskies, who are 185-58 all-time versus ranked opponents, will face the Terps for the first time on Monday night. Connecticut is 2-2 all-time when playing in the Jimmy V Classic with the most recent game resulting in a 81-51 win over Texas A&M on December 6, 2011.
