STORRS, Conn. – The top-ranked University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is back on the road for a non-conference tilt against Duquesne on Friday night. The Huskies and the Dukes will head north for a neutral site contest on Friday, December 22 at the Mattamy Athletic Center in Toronto, Ontario. The contest is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. (ET) and will be broadcast nationally on SNY and ESPN3.
The tilt features a homecoming game for senior guard Kia Nurse who is from Hamilton, Ontario. Nurse, who was tabbed to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List earlier this season, is second on the squad averaging 15.6 points per game. The senior has started all nine games played for UConn and is shooting an impressive 54.3-percent (19-23) from downtown.
Connecticut is currently 9-0 on the season after defeating Oklahoma 88-64 at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Holiday Showcase at the Mohegan Sun Arena. With the win Head Coach Geno Auriemma and Associate Head Coach Chris Dailey joined the ranks of basketball’s elite with their 1,000th career win.
Five Huskies are averaging double-figures in scoring, with junior guard Katie Lou Samuelson leading the way with 18.0 points per game on 47.6-percent (30-63) shooting from the floor. Classmates Azura Stevens and Napheesa Collier are chipping in with 15.3 and 15.2 points per game, respectively. Sophomore Crystal Dangerfield rounds out the double-digit scorers averaging 13.6 points.
Duquesne (10-2) enters the tilt riding an eight-game win streak after completing a 64-61 comeback win against Central Michigan on December 17. Friday’s contest marks just the third meeting between the two teams in the sport of women’s basketball, as Connecticut holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Next up, the Huskies close out the 2017 season with their conference opener against Memphis on Sunday, December 31. UConn welcomes the Tigers to the XL Center in downtown Hartford for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
