Chrissy Davidson was one of three Huskies to record an assist in Saturday's game.
STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated Rye Field Hockey Club, 3-0, on Saturday in the team's lone exhibition game at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex. Freshman Charlotte Veitner (Dusseldorf, Germany) recorded a hat-trick in her first collegiate showing for the Huskies, who kick off the 2014 campaign on Aug. 31 against Northwestern.
Veitner got the Huskies on the board in the 17th minute, flipping a backhanded shot past the Rye keeper and into the bottom left of the cage. Senior captain Chrissy Davidson (West Lawn, Pa.), who notched 12 assists in 2013, was credited with the helper to put the Huskies up 1-0.
UConn added to its lead in the 58th minute when Chloe Hunnable (Halstead, England) tapped a backwards pass in the middle of the circle towards Veitner, who was able to finish with a powerful shot. Veitner completed her excellent debut with a third goal in the 62nd minute, scoring off a stellar pass from midfielder Sophie Bowden (Somerset, England).
Nina Klein (Topton, Pa.) played all 70 minutes for the Huskies, thwarting the Rye offense. The Huskies allowed nine total shots and just three in the opening 50 minutes.
UConn used a balanced offensive attack to put 10 shots on goal and also held an 18-9 overall shot advantage. Hunnable led the squad with five total shots, putting three on goal. Overall, nine different Huskies attempted at least one shot and the Huskies were able to secure five total penalty corner attempts.
