STORRS, Conn. -Three different Huskies scored as the No. 6 University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated Bucknell, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. The contest was the season opener for both squads.
UConn has now won nine-straight season openers.
It took UConn just 7:48 to get on the scoreboard as Bolles, the Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, dribbled deep into the circle and flipped a shot that was saved by Bucknell goalkeeper Erica Perrine. The rebound deflected to newcomer Mckenzie Townsendthough, who nailed a shot inside the far post to give UConn a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.
Bolles added some insurance for the Huskies when she once again got deep into the circle and drilled another shot inside the far post. UConn ended the first half with an 11-0 advantage in shots, including a 7-0 edge in shots on goal.
The Huskies out-shot Bucknell by a 23-1 margin and held an 8-0 edge in penalty corners. First Team All-America goalkeeper Sarah Mansfieldwas forced to make only one save en route to posting the shutout.
Perrine made 10 saves in net for the Bison.
Connecticut is back in action on Sunday, August 26 when the team welcomes intrastate foe Sacred Heart to the George J. Sherman Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
