Field Hockey Claims Share of BIG EAST Regular Season Title with 4-0 Shutout at Villanova

In her entire 30-year head coaching career, Stevens has notched an overall record of 480-154-24, which also includes head coaching stints at Franklin & Marshall and Northwestern.

With the win, the Huskies close out the 2008 regular season 16-2 overall and 5-1 in BIG EAST play.  Villanova slips to 12-7 and 2-4 following the loss.

The Huskies will await their seed in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship, which will be held at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on the UConn campus in Storrs on Sat.-Sun., Nov. 8-9.  Louisville, Syracuse and Providence are the other three teams that have qualified for the conference tournament.

Freshman Cara Silverman (Roseland, N.J.) got the scoring started for Connecticut with her fifth goal of the season off an assist from senior Lindsey Leck (Clarksburg, N.J.) at 26:54.

Senior Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) upped the advantage to 2-0 at 39:53 when she put away a rebound for her first of two goals on the day.

Leck followed less than 10 minutes later with her eighth tally of the season on a successful penalty stroke attempt to make it 3-0.

Aird notched her second goal of the game and her team-leading 17th this season at 67:36 to close out the scoring.

For the game, Connecticut out-shot Villanova 15-8 and attempted seven penalty corners to the Wildcats' three opportunities.

UConn goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero (Emmaus, Pa.) made four saves while recording her sixth shutout of the season.
