Field Hockey Advances to BIG EAST Title Game with 4-1 Win Over Louisville
No. 3 seed Connecticut will battle No. 1 seed Syracuse (19-1) in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship Game on Sunday, Nov. 9 beginning at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The Huskies gave the Orange their lone loss this season by a 1-0 margin on Oct. 18 in Syracuse.
The two teams battled scoreless for the opening 31:39 before Aird buried her first score of the afternoon off a feed by sophomore and fellow first team All-BIG EAST selection Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.).
Senior Meghan Wheeler (Canton, Mass.) added her third goal of the season on an unassisted tally at 32:57 to give Connecticut a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Freshman Ali Blankmeyer (Convent Station, N.J.) didn't waste any time getting UConn on the scoreboard in the second half as she connected on a feed from Aird just 1:49 into the final period to increase the advantage to 3-0.
Louisville finally got on the board off the stick of Kayla May, who registered her ninth goal of the season at 38:37 to make the score 3-1.
Connecticut erased any doubt regarding the outcome when Aird knocked home her second goal of the day following an assist from Jill Kleeblad (Naarden, Holland) to account for the final 4-1 margin.
For the game, Connecticut out-shot Louisville 14-7 and attempted nine penalty corners to the Cardinals' five.
Following today's BIG EAST Semifinal win, Connecticut improves to 26-8 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament action.
