With the win, Syracuse improves to 20-1 and is awarded the BIG EAST Conference's automatic berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Following the loss, Connecticut slips to 17-3 and will await an at-large NCAA berth when the tournament seedings and pairings are announced Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 8:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
The Huskies outplayed the Orange for the majority of the contest as they attempted a total of 18 shots, including 10 in the second half, while limiting the Orange to six. In addition, Connecticut earned a total of 10 penalty corners compared to Syracuse's six opportunities.
Syracuse goalkeeper Heather Hess turned away nine of those shots and was a key factor in the Huskies being shutout on their penalty corner attempts.
Just prior to the decisive penalty corner, Connecticut appeared to seize momentum as it staved off the Orange offense as it played a person down for a total of 7:30 late in the second half following a yellow card to Rayell Heistand (Hamburg, Pa.).
UConn players Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe), Meghan Wheeler (Canton, Mass.), Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) and Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim, Germany) were each selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
