Connecticut vs. North Carolina Post Game Quotes

Nov. 18, 2011

Recap |  Box Score

Head Coach Nancy Stevens
Opening Statement:

“We are tremendously proud of our effort today, but obviously disappointed we did not win. We were under a lot of pressure today. I thought our goalkeeper was brilliant and gave us an opportunity to win. I guess we just needed the clock to move a little faster at the end. It was great game and very special to be a part of.”

On scoring three goals in the first half and none in the second:

“Well, I think what happens is when you are down by three goals you keep attacking the goal. When it is two good teams playing you push forward and they did that well. They pulled their goalie with fifteen minutes to go which obviously gives them the man up situation and they play with four backs. It is a different situation than we play with. They form a little shell and made it difficult for us to get any shots. They are so sound defensively.”

On Mansfield:

“She is really the reason we thought we could win. In tournament play, goaltending is paramount. As a freshman she was an All-American so her talent has been recognized. When I see her, I think about the Madden video game where you can build the perfect player. She has every quality you could ask for in a keeper- size, strength, quickness, great communicator and she hates to be scored on. We’re lucky, we have her for two more years. We knew she had to be big for us and she was. She is the nicest kid, we are truly fortunate to have Sarah Mansfield on our team.”

Sophomore forward Marie Elena Bolles
On scoring three goals in the first half:

“I think we just really wanted it. We did a great job of passing around them and getting the ball in the right spot. We did a good job of making two touches which is what we needed to do because you can’t break them one on one because they are so good defensively.”

On the loss:

“It is very hard that we lost. But, I know I can speak for my team and say that we are very proud of what we did and what we accomplished this year. We left everything on the field today. There are not many games that you can say that. I’m so proud of our team.”
