CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Former University of Connecticut field hockey standouts Marie Elena Bolles (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) helped the U.S. Women’s National Team sweep a four-match tournament against Canada.
In the 8-0 finale win on Friday, Bolles recorded her first career hat trick as a member of the national team. She nabbed her first tally after catching a pass off the corner and firing into the back of the net. Bolles followed it up with a blast past the goal line from the right side of the pitch after a scramble in front of the cage. She concluded her trio with a goal at the stroke line.
In the 47th minute, Gonzalez sent the ball flying into the left corner of the mesh for the decisive eighth goal.
The USWNT is looking to carry the momentum into its preparation for the Champions Trophy and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
