STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut field hockey team has been honored as one of 52 schools nationwide with the 2010 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Team Award. Each program honored achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Huskies put together an outstanding all around season in 2010 as the team posted a 16-6 overall record, marking the 23rd time in program history the team has posted at least 15 wins. Connecticut qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the ninth-straight year and advanced to the Quarterfinal round for the fifth time in the last eight seasons.
Seven Huskies earned mention on the All-Mideast Region Team and Melissa Gonzalez, who recently completed competition with the United States National Team at the Four Nations Tournament, was honored as the Mideast Region Player of the Year.
Additionally, seven different Huskies won a total of nine BIG EAST awards highlighted by Gonzalez being named as the league's Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight year. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
