STORRS, Conn. - Former UConn field hockey All-America Melissa Gonzalez has been chosen as one of 18 athletes to compete for Team USA in the 2014 World Cup, as announced by head coach Craig Parnham on Monday. The World Cup will run from May 31 – June 15 in the Hague, Netherlands and fans can watch all the matches live on ESPN3.com.
“Competition for places has been fierce and it's always difficult for those not selected,” said Parnham. “However, the strength of the World Cup team is a result of all the hard work that the whole squad commits to each day in training. We now focus on our final preparations and look forward to the start of the World Cup.”
Gonzalez is the first Husky since Tracey Fuchs to play for the USA during the World Cup. 2014 will be Team USA’s first World Cup appearance since 2006.
