Young Women's National Championship
STORRS, Conn. – Four players on the UConn field hockey team have been selected to compete in the 2017 Young Women’s National Championship (YWNC) at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. from June 12-16.
Seniors Karlie Heistand and Casey Umstead, as well as juniors Amanda Collins and Amelia Iacobucci, will be participating in the annual event, which features some of the most elite field hockey athletes in the country – including collegiate and post-collegiate players.
Umstead and Collins, both named to the U.S. U-21 National Team in January, will be playing under head coach Phil Edwards. Heistand, a member of the U.S. Development Squad, will compete with her team under head coach Jun Kentwell.
Iacobucci will be playing on one of the mixed teams known as “USA Freedom”, led by coaches Andrew Griffiths and Stefanie Fee.
Each of the four student-athletes have been selected for the YWNC at least once prior, including the third selection for both Heistand and Umstead, dating back to the summer following their freshmen seasons.
Over the spring, select athletes tried out and trained at regional USA Field Hockey High Performance sites throughout the country for a chance at earning a roster spot. The athletes on the YWNC roster will play for the title, as well as a possible future opportunity with the U.S. Development Squad or U-21 National Team.
Janneke Schopman, the U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach and Director of Junior High Performance, selected the coaches for the YWNC.
All four Huskies will be playing in Pool A, which consists of the U.S. Development Squad, U-21 National Team, USA Freedom and USA Eagles. In Pool N, it will be USA Gold, USA Patriots, USA Red, and USA White.
