Karlie Heistand Earns Spot On U.S. U-21 Women's National Team

STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut freshman midfielder Karlie Heistand (Hamburg, Pa.) has earned a spot on the 2014-15 U-21 Junior Women's National Squad as announced by USA Field Hockey on Friday.

Beginning in mid-June, athletes showcased their skills in front of an array of selectors in the hopes of making the cut for Junior National Camp. Between Under-21 National Championship, Futures Elite Championship and National Futures Championship, 112 athletes were selected to attend the four-day Junior National Camp. During camp, athletes learned from some of the best collegiate coaches in the country and competed for one of the highly sought after slots on the Under-21, Under-19 and Under-17 Junior National Squads.

The Hamburg, Pa. native, sister of Rayell Heistand, who played for the Huskies from 2008-11, comes to Storrs after being named Team MVP of Hamburg Area High School in each of her four years with the Hawks. Hesitand was a two-time team captain in high school, finishing with 73 total goals and 58 assists, while also earning a spot on the U.S. Women's U-19 National Team.

In her final two seasons in high school, the midfielder scored a combined 47 goals and dished out 29 assists en route to two All-State selections and a Regional All-America honor in her senior campaign.
