TORONTO -- Former UConn field hockey standout Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) earned a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games on Friday night after she helped the U.S. Women's National Team defeat Argentina, 2-1.

Gonzalez's tenacious defense forced turnovers and kept Argentina from gaining the upper hand. She started in all six of Team USA's victories and posted three goals in the tournament.

Before meeting Argentina, the United States had a spotless record, not conceding a goal in 300 minutes of tournament play. They outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 39-1.

With the win, the United States earned its invitation to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

This is the second medal for Gonzalez, who won her first gold piece during the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara.
