Head Coach Nancy Stevens and the reigning Big East Regular Season and Tournament Champions are excited to get back on the field, as they begin their journey towards another extraordinary year.
All UConn players reported on Wednesday for preseason meetings, before beginning official team practices on Thursday. The roster features 26 student-athletes, made up of 15 returning letter winners and 11 newcomers, who will play together for the first time as a team versus an opponent.
UConn turned in its fourth straight 20-win season in 2016, boasting a 22-2 record that landed the Huskies a spot in the NCAA Final Four.
The squad features 15 returners, including First Team All-American Charlotte Veitner and Third Team All-American Casey Umstead. While Veitner returns as the team's leading scorer in points (71), goals (27) and assists (17), the Huskies also welcome back goalkeeper Nina Klein who posted up an impressive 1.22 goals against average and six shutouts last fall.
Additionally, senior midfielder and 2016 All-Big East Second Team selection Karlie Heistand will look to build off of her career-best junior campaign.
The Last Time...
The last time UConn and Syracuse met on the field hockey turf, it was the Huskies who walked away with the victory. The Orange saw their season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA tournament, thanks to Charlotte Veitner's double overtime goal that propelled the Huskies into the semifinal game.
