STORRS, Conn. – For an unprecedented seventh-straight season, the University of Connecticut field hockey team has been selected to finish first in the Big East Preseason Poll, as announced by the league on Friday morning.
The Huskies, who reached the NCAA Semifinals in 2015, recorded 49 points and received seven first-place votes in the poll. Liberty, a new addition to the Big East, finished second with 40 points and one first-place votes.
For the second consecutive season, Veitner was tabbed as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, following her sensational 2015 campaign. Middendorf was named Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, along with Liberty’s Serena Barr.
Veitner was named First Team All-American and the Big East Offensive Player of the Year in 2015, leading the nation in goals (39), assists (21) and points (99). She is currently sixth on UConn’s all-time points list (147).
Middendorf, All-Mideast Region First Team and Third Team All-American, played in all 23 games and recorded 28 points for the Huskies. Umstead, All-Mideast Region Second Team last season, was second on the team with 18 goals.
Klein started all 23 games for UConn, making 49 saves and recording 11 shut-out victories. She allowed just 14 goals all season, on her way to being selected All-Mideast Region First Team and All-Big East First Team.
UConn has accounted for 30 Big East championships in program history, split evenly among Big East regular season titles and Big East Tournament titles.
The Huskies open the season on the west coast, playing at Stanford on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. (ET) and at Pacific on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. (ET).
