STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut field hockey team has been tabbed No. 5 in the 2010 Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Preseason Poll as announced by the NFHCA on Tuesday. Connecticut, which finished the 2009 season ranked No. 5 nationally, received 769 points in the poll.

Defending national champion North Carolina is the preseason No. 1 while the only other squads UConn trailed were Maryland, Virginia and Princeton. The Huskies will face UNC on October 10 and Princeton on October 17.

The Huskies, who were selected to win their 12th BIG EAST Regular Season championship in a vote by the league coaches earlier this month, finished the 2009 season with a 19-3 overall mark and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 21st time in program history. UConn also won its 11th BIG EAST Tournament crown in 2009.

Connecticut returns nine starters and six of the team's top-seven scorers from the 2009 squad and will open the 2010 campaign on Sunday, August 29th against Maine. The season-opener is set for 12 p.m. at the George J. Family Sports Complex in Storrs.
