STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut field hockey team has been ranked No. 3 in the 2014 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll, as announced on Tuesday morning.
The Huskies received 14 first-place votes en route to 831 total points. Only Maryland (881) and UNC (855) were picked ahead of UConn, with Duke (766) and Syracuse (729) rounding out the top-five.
Connecticut will head into the season after a wildly successful 2013 campaign during which the Huskies captured the NCAA Division I National Championship, Big East Tournament crown, and a share of the Big East regular season title.
UConn's No. 3 ranking is the best among all Big East school, while league rival Old Dominion checked in at No. 9 with 516 points. Earlier this month, the Huskies were unanimously picked to win the conference by a vote of the league's coaches.
Eight of UConn's 17 opponents were ranked in the preseason poll, headlined by the second-ranked Tar Heels.
UConn will open the 2014 season on Sunday, Aug. 31 when No. 14 Northwestern visits the Storrs campus for a 12 p.m. showdown.
