No. 4 UConn Cruises to 7-0 Win Against No. 14 Northwestern

STORRS, Conn. –
The No. 4 UConn field hockey team cruised to a 7-0 victory against No. 14 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon en route to their second straight shutout victory. Six different players scored for the Huskies (2-0), who put on an offensive show in front of their home crowd at the Sherman Family Complex.

Led by senior goalkeeper Nina Klein, UConn’s defense has not allowed a goal so far this season. Klein now owns 26 career shutouts, seven shy of tying Sarah Mansfield for the program record.

Junior Amanda Collins paced the offense with three points and two goals for her first multi-point scoring effort of 2017. Seniors Casey Umstead and Charlotte Veitner also turned in multi-point performances, tallying a goal and an assist apiece.  Additionally, junior Amelia Iacobucci, sophomore Antonia Tiedtke and freshman Margot van Hecking Colenbrander each added a goal, while sophomore Svea Boker picked up her first assist of the season.

The Huskies held a comfortable 3-0 lead at the half thanks to goals by Iacobucci, Collins and Colenbrander. Iacobucci was credited with the game-winner with her tally in the 12th minute. UConn dominated from the start, racking up a heavy 14-3 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes.


 

 

The squad continued to find its offensive groove in the second half as four different players found the back of the cage. First, Collins notched her second tally of the contest with a flick shot in the 51st minute, before Veitner made it a 5-0 game just three minutes later. Tiedtke and Umstead would eventually round out the scoring for the home squad with two more scores in the 57th and 61st minute for the 7-0 final.

Throughout the game, UConn held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The Huskies concluded the JDH Invitation with a 2-0 record, defeating two, Top-25 opponents in No.13 Stanford and No.14 Northwestern. UConn is back in action on Sunday, September 3 at Michigan in their first road tilt of the season.
