STORRS, Conn. - The No. 3 University of Connecticut field hockey team is set to begin the 2014 campaign on Sunday, Aug. 31 when it hosts No. 14 Northwestern at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex at 12 p.m.

UConn returns 16 letterwinners from the 2013 national championship team and will be led by captains Chrissy Davidson (West Lawn, Pa.) and Roisin Upton (Limerick, Ireland), who were tabbed as Preseason All-Big East team members.

In 2013, the Huskies were ranked in the top-10 among all Division I schools in goals against average (1.13), points per game (9.04), scoring margin (1.95), and winning percentage (.840).

Head coach Nancy Stevens returns to the helm of the program for her 25th year after guiding UConn to its third national championship last November. Stevens has led UConn to 12 straight NCAA Tournament berths and the Huskies have advanced to the NCAA National Semifinals six times in the last 18 seasons. With a 575-175-24 record, Stevens passed Old Dominion coach Beth Anders in 2013 as the sport's all-time winner.

Earlier this month, UConn was picked as the unanimous favorite to win the Big East regular season title and also enjoyed a No. 3 ranking in the Preseason Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll.

Northwestern is coming off a 15-5 season and claimed a share of the Big Ten regular season title for the first time since 1994. The Wildcats are coached by former Husky standout Tracey Fuchs, who has compiled a 66-35 record in five seasons. Northwestern returns 17 letterwinners from the 2013 squad and earned the No. 14 ranking in the preseason national poll.

Sunday's showdown will be just the second time the two programs have met on the field, with the Huskies downing the Wildcats, 2-0, in the 1983 NCAA Semifinals.

Following the game, there will be a short ceremony to honor Fuchs. For more information on Fuchs' career, please CLICK HERE.
