STORRS, Conn. – Senior midfielder Anna Middendorf has been named Big East Defensive Player of the Week following the No. 3 University of Connecticut field hockey team’s two-game sweep of No. 11 Stanford and Pacific this past weekend.
The Huskies (2-0) were unbeaten out in California and now return to Storrs for the start of classes today for the fall semester. The home-opener is on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Drexel with a 12 p.m. start time.
Middendorf (Bremen, Germany) scored two goals in a 5-2 win over Pacific, a team receiving votes in the NFHCA Preseason Poll, on Sunday afternoon. Through two games, she has recorded a team-high in shots (eight) and shots on goal (six).
With Middendorf’s defensive prowess backing up UConn’s strong offensive attack, the Huskies allowed just three combined goals against two of the country’s top programs. UConn held a 7-3 scoring advantage on the first weekend of the season.
Voted the Big East Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Middendorf proved early why she was recognized with the preseason honor. Both of her goals on Sunday came off penalty corners, as UConn held a combined 18-4 edge over Stanford and Pacific in that category.
Sophomore Amanda Collins was named to the Big East Honor Roll for her two-goal performance against the Tigers as well; the second multi-goal game of her career.
The Big East made its first weekly award announcements on Monday afternoon. Each Monday throughout the season, it will name a conference Offensive Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week.
