NEW YORK - Sophomore forward Charlotte Veitner (Dusseldorf, Germany) of UConn's field hockey team has been named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon, after posting back-to-back hat tricks in the Huskies two wins over the weekend.
Veitner notched the first goal in UConn's 7-0 home opener victory on Friday against Quinnipiac. Just four minutes into the game, senior Megan Palmisano (Chatham, N.J) found Veitner through traffic, who ripped the ball past the Wildcats' goalie. Veitner powered a back-handed shot into the back of the cage off a feed from senior Mckenzie Townsend (Harpursville, N.Y.). She completed her hat trick after she collected her rebound and pushed it back into the net for the score.
In the Huskies 9-1 win over Columbia on Sunday, Veitner once again put the Huskies on the board first after she spun to control a loose ball and launched it into the goal. She added her second tally of the game when she redirected a solid pass from the top of the circle into the left side of the net. Freshman Amanda Collins (Binghamton, N.Y.) centered the pass and Veitner chipped it past the keeper, registering the hat trick.
Through four games, Veitner tops the team and conference with 10 goals and 20 points. UConn is the only team in the Big East that remains undefeated.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday when they host New Hampshire at 7 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs.
