Sarah Mansfield has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in her career.
STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore forward Marie Elena Bolles, the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, has been honored as the league's Offensive Player of the Week and BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Sarah Mansfieldhas been named as the conference's Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the BIG EAST on Monday.
Bolles was also honored as the ECAC Regional Player of the Week, as announced on Tuesday.
Bolles, who earns the award for the second-consecutive week, and Mansfield were key in leading the No. 7 University of Connecticut field hockey team to a perfect 2-0 week, which included victories over No. 15 Michigan and at No. 21 Albany.
Bolles scored both goals in a 2-1 win over No. 15 Michigan. The junior forward also scored once in a 2-1 win against No. 21 Albany. Her six-point performance last weekend made Bolles the league's leader in goals with six and points with 15. She is also the league's only player to average more than one goal per game at 1.2 goals-per-game.
The Phoenixville, Pa. native leads the Huskies with six goals and 15 points and she is tied for the team lead with three points.
Mansfield recorded 14 total saves in two 2-1 wins over No. 15 Michigan and No. 21 Albany for the Huskies. The 2010 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year has a save percentage of .880, allowing just three goals in five games. All three goals came against ranked opponents.
Mansfield has earned the accolade three times in her career.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, September 15 when the team welcomes Rutgers to Storrs for the 2012 BIG EAST Conference opener. Connecticut begins its 2011 Regular Season title defense at 12 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
