Big East Full Release
STORRS, Conn. - After scoring two goals in Sunday's 4-0 win over Harvard, sophomore forward Amanda Collins has been named Big East Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
For Collins, it is the second straight week that she has earned the award, as the No. 4 University of Connecticut field hockey team improved to 5-0 after this past weekend. Collins has earned Big East recognition in each of the first three weeks of the season (honor roll on Aug. 29).
In a scoreless game against the Crimson, Collins scored in the ninth and 12th minutes of the first half to give UConn a 2-0 lead - an edge it would not relinquish while recording its first shut-out victory of the season.
During Friday's 2-1 victory over UMass, Collins assisted on senior Anna Middendorf's goal off of a penalty corner which tied the game in the second half. Until the 48th minute, the Huskies were trailing 1-0.
Collins' two-goal performance against Harvard was her second multi-goal game of the season and the third in her career. She is tied for the team-lead this season with five goals and has recorded a team-high 13 points through five games.
In addition to Collins, Middendorf and freshman Svea Boker were selected to the Big East Honor Roll for the week of Sept. 12. For Boker, it is the first weekly award of her UConn career.
The No. 4 Huskies return to action on Friday to play their first conference game of the season at No. 15 Old Dominion. UConn follows that with a game at No. 11 Virginia on Sunday in an action-packed weekend.
