UConn Sweeps BIG EAST Field Hockey Player of the Week Honors

STORRS, Conn. (September 13, 2004) — Senior Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and junior Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) were named BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the period ending September 12, the BIG EAST Conference announced today.

Henderson totaled seven goals while leading the Huskies to a 3-0 record last week, including a season-high four-goal effort vs. Quinnipiac. The senior followed with a pair of goals against both Vermont and Princeton to close out the week.

Henderson enters this week just four goals and eight points shy of tying the UConn career records in both categories currently held by former Husky standout and current U.S. National Team member Tracey Fuchs (79 goals, 178 points).

Bostwick allowed only one goal over three games last week while posting a goals allowed average of 0.35. The junior goalie posted two shutouts (vs. Vermont and Princeton) over the week to give her three for the season. She entered this year with one career shutout to her credit.

She made six of her seven saves vs. Princeton in the second half and was key in stopping nine second-half penalty corner attempts in the win over the Tigers.

The weekly conference honor marks the eighth of Henderson’s career, while Bostwick was recognized for the first time.

The pair are the first two members of the UConn field hockey team to be honored by the conference this season.

The Huskies, who have opened the season with six straight wins, are off to their best start since the 1999 season when they advanced to the national semifinals.

Connecticut will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 19 when they travel to Villanova to open BIG EAST Conference play beginning at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
