VILLANOVA, Pa. (September 17, 2006) - The No. 9 University of Connecticut field hockey team dropped its BIG EAST Conference opener 4-1 at No. 20 Villanova on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Huskies to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action. The Wildcats move to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league play with the victory.
UConn lost despite put-shooting Villanova for the game 16-8 and attempting 12 penalty corners while limiting the Wildcats to five opportunities.
Villanova (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 advantage at the 12:13 mark when Lauren Campanelli scored off an assist from Stephanie Campbell.
UConn (5-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) answered on the first goal of the season by senior Meagan Hoffmann (West Granby, Conn.), which was assisted by Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim, Germany) to knot the contest at 1-1 with less than 13 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Megan Foster began a stretch of three consecutive goals by Villanova with the first of her two scores in the game with just 1:37 remining in the first half, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Foster scored her second goal just over five minutes into the second half to increase the Wildcats lead to 3-1 before Jenn Nazarethian rounded out the games scoring off a feed from Foster to up the margin to 4-1 at 56:04.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 when they travel to face Harvard beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
