GILBERT, Ariz. – Senior Charlotte Veitner of the No. 1 UConn field hockey team garnered her second consecutive Longstreth/ National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Offensive Player of the Week Selection after a pair of extraordinary performances last week.
Veitner tallied 15 points, six goals and three assists, in a 2-0 week for the Huskies, who own a 7-0 clip in 2017 as the only undefeated team in DI. The forward posted six of the squad’s 14 goals last week, averaging 7.5 points, 3.0 goals and 1.5 assists per game.
The senior began the week with two goals against BIG EAST foe Old Dominion, before racking up an astonishing 11 points (4g, 3a) in a dominating 8-1 win against No. 20 Boston University. Her four-goal performance against the Terriers marked her second of the year, as she holds a program-record 13 career hat tricks as a Husky. Veitner is currently pacing all Huskies in points and goals, boasting 28 and 12, respectively, so far this season.
Veitner is no stranger to goal scoring, as the 2015 NCAA Statistical Points Leader has positioned herself amongst the top in the nation once again. Through seven games so far this season, Veitner ranks second nationally with 4.00 points per game and 1.71 goals per game.
The senior has been an offensive force during her time in a Huskies uniform, as Veitner’s 96 career goals is just two shy of breaking UConn’s all-time goals record of 97, set by Lauren Henderson (2001-04). Veitner currently holds the program’s top spot in points (246) and assists (54), claiming both distinctions during the 2016 season.
UConn is back in action on Friday, Sept. 22 at BIG EAST foe Temple (6 p.m.). The Huskies are currently 1-0 in conference action after defeating Old Dominion, 6-0, on Sept. 15.
